What to Expect During Laser Hair Removal

blog (32)Laser hair removal is an effective way of removing unwanted hair. It is much less painful than other techniques such as waxing and electrolysis. It also offers permanent results, so it will require fewer treatments – about three to seven treatments. After a few treatments, your hair should be reduced, and you don’t need to worry about making repeated appointments.

How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal

Be sure to find a qualified esthetician. This cannot be stressed enough. There are some risks involved in the procedure, and you need to be sure that the esthetician fully understands the procedure and the laser hair removal system.

Do not wax, pluck, or do electrolysis for at least six weeks before the procedure. The laser hair removal system targets the hairs’ roots, which are temporarily removed during all of these types of hair removal. You can still shave before the procedure.

You may want to plan your laser hair removal well before you will be spending time in the sun. It can be so easy for patients to think that they can remove the hair on their bikini line or legs right before they go on a tropical vacation. While this is what is usually done for other hair removal techniques, such as waxing, it is not recommended for laser hair removal. Sun exposure makes the laser treatments less effective and could even cause complications.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Before the procedure, your hair will be trimmed to a few millimeters above your skin. The esthetician will then adjust the laser hair removal system according to your skin color and the color, thickness, and location of your hair being treated. All of these factors affect your treatments, which is why the number of treatments varies.

Your esthetician will then test a small area of your skin and watch for a reaction to ensure that the system is on the best setting. If it is not on the right setting, your esthetician will adjust it. If it is on the best setting, your esthetician will continue with the procedure.

Once the procedure is complete, the esthetician will give you ice packs or creams to help you with any discomfort. Everyone reacts differently to the procedure

After the Procedure

Be sure to treat the skin with sunblock and be aware of any irritation. Many individuals notice some redness and sensitivity. If you notice any kind of blistering, talk to your esthetician immediately. This is a rare reaction, but it can happen.

A few days after your treatment, you may notice something that may look like a regrowth of hair. This is not the case. You are simply shedding the hair that is being removed. These hairs will not regrow.
